I'm confused by all the ruckus going on in the States (or various states I should say) about allowing gay marriage.

I live in the Northwest Territories of Canada and here gay marriage has been allowed for years. In fact, some of my friends and co-workers are married homosexuals. Has it had any measurable effect on our society? Has it caused our "morals" to erode and all the local children to turn into hell-spawn? Nope. In fact, I can't notice a damn thing different about our society other than maybe a few more folks are happy now that they have the same rights as anyone else. Now, before gay marriage was allowed here we went through some of the same political and legal wrangling I see south of the border.

There was a lot of bluster from some religious groups about the "gay agenda" and how if it was allowed we were just a hop skip and a jump away from legalizing pedophilia and human sacrifice on main street. Well, a couple years after we allowed the so-called abomination of gay marriage it's really illustrated how utterly ridiculous the counter arguments all were. Our economy was unaffected by it, the schools and other institutions were unaffected by it, and it exposed the anti-gay marriage crowd for what they really were: Fear-Mongerers!

Most of the opponents of gay marriage here were heavily involved with various churches, and generally speaking the church is really good at fear-mongering. I remember growing up in a southern baptist church where they had me and all the other six year olds terrified we were going to go to hell for some obscure reason unless we obeyed without question. Anywho. I suppose it stands to reason that any group would use the tools at it's disposal that it's most comfortable with, so they tried the 'ol fear card yet again.

A lot of hot air and blustery ensued, and now that some time has passed since we went down the path of evil (or whatever you want to call it) it's plainly evident that all of the arguments against it were nothing but hot air.

I also think that as a society we've got much bigger fish to fry than whether or not gays should marry, but the topic serves a convenient excuse for a distraction from more important and more complicated matters. Like for example the fact that our entire economic system is practically falling apart at the seams and is not in any way sustainable in it's present form. Or maybe the fact that after decades of playing "the great game" around the world we've painted ourselves into a pretty ugly corner facing a newly re-armed Russia and China that are not in much of a mood to negotiate right now. Those topics, however are much more difficult and uncomfortable to tackle, so let's just stick to the good ol' arguments so we can ignore the real issues facing us.

Those good 'ol arguments presently are:

1) Abortion

2) Gun Control

3) Gay Marriage

4) Creationism vs. Evolution

Any of the above issues are based on fear-mongering more than anything else and don't lead to any kind of productive discussion, and completely IGNORE the real problems we are being faced with right now!

Well no one has put forth a logical argument on the position of gay marriage being wrong - it can only follow from some instinctual or religious feeling (though Jesus, to my knowledge, never talks about gays though he mentions adultery several times). I see little efficacy in challenging another's personal conviction as rarely, if ever, works where someone changes their mind.

That is different that saying legalizing it would cause some harmful effect on society - which I personally have yet to see proof for.

As to the argument that it introduces something that could change society, so did interracial marriage. Since I expect to be involved in one of those, I can't see how I can be for one and against the other.

I'm mostly with you, Artysim. We shouldn't be focusing on gay marriage when a far darker evil lurks - gay singing. The argument against it is powerful and conclusive.

It's time we acted to preserve the sanctity of song against the secret evils of homosexuality. It's for the kids.

Personally I don't care if gays want equal treatment or what. I say let them have it. If it has some kind f bad consequences then we cross that bridge when we get to it. Otherwise I also think this is a waste of time.

I'm curious though why you are confused about all the fuse when your comment below pretty much clears up any confusion you might have. It's called a Democracy; we all argue why we think it should be this way or that way because, well, it's our right to say that we either like or dislike something and then we put it to a vote and fight for what we believe in. You win some, you lose some and we then see if the one that wins was right or not. At least that's how I see it.

Actually, he is wrong. There was some fuss about it in some part of the country, but the general feeling from one ocean to the other was that "let them be". Only the Conservative Alberta was strongly against.

But then again, we won't let Texas Alberta decide for the country.

Yep. However there are many who confuse the edicts of the bible for actual law (or wish it were so)

It's time we acted to preserve the sanctity of song against the secret evils of homosexuality. It's for the kids.

Very true. But if there's something that gays completely kick us straight folks' asses in, it's cooking and fashion sense. I'm not kidding. Those guys and gals really know how to throw together a meal and a wardrobe. So, we teach them to sing, they teach us to cook and dress and the world will be a better place?

Thanks Cacto. I think we tend to see eye to eye on a fair number of issues.

Very droll Cikomyr! But very true at the same time

But that's the thing. We only have fierce opposition from one concentrated area of the country, the measure passed, and...

Life goes on. Hell, if I wanted to cheat statistics, I could even point out that birthrate have increased in Quebec since they passed the law (but it's totally unrelated).

So, please, gay-bashers, what's the big deal? We don't force churches to celebrate marriage if they don't want to, but we allow churches to perform gay marriage ceremony if they do want to. The end. Only a disgruntled minority still is angry about it, but they don't seem to see that there is nothing to dislike about the situation.

Northwest Territory hum, maybe the picken's that slim a guy would rather have another guy.   Seriously, Canadians should advertise this, it could be the new San Fransisco up there.
